Self Hosted Solution to Common Apps!

We all use a lot controlled cloud solutions, like Dropbox, Spotify and bunch of other tools.
Here is a list of self hosted solutions to control your own data.

It's easier than ever to spin up a server and do your own computing. Keeping your data on a system you control means you don't need to worry about services shutting down, nefarious Terms of Service changes, or who might have access to your information.
Check e.g. DigitalOcean, there are a lot of self hosted solutions that you can install in a few clicks.
You also get $10 of credits to test it!

Here are some examples:

  • ownCloud
  • Tiny Tiny RSS
  • Ghost
  • GitLab
  • RocketChat
  • Ampache
  • Piwik

ownCloud

OwnCloud is a great replacement for Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft's OneDrive. It has a slick web interface, desktop sync clients for Linux, Windows and OS X, and mobile clients for Android and iOS.

Tiny Tiny RSS

Google Reader's untimely demise spawned two popular feed aggregators, Feedly and Feedbin. Tiny Tiny RSS is a fantastic alternative. It supports content filtering, podcast aggregation, plugins, theming, and social media sharing. It's primarily a web app, but it also has an official Android client.

Ghost

This blog runs on Ghost. Ghost.org offers a hosted version, but you can also download it here and self-host. Ghost provides a great writing experience — and unlike Medium, Svbtle and Blogger, you have complete control over your data.

GitLab

GitLab is great for self-hosting both public and private Git projects. It has a robust permission system, supports merge requests, works well with continuous integration servers, and includes a per-project wiki and issue tracker. It's not as social as GitHub, but it's just as powerful. Tiny Tiny RSS (above) is hosted on GitLab.

RocketChat

RocketChat is a polished, extensible Slack alternative. It supports video and audio conferencing (which Slack lacks), link previews and file sharing, and has native clients for Windows, OS X, Linux, Android and iOS.

Ampache

Ampache is a simple web-based audio and video streaming server. Ampache could make a good alternative to Rdio, Spotify or iTunes Music, or you could use ownCloud to synchronize your music between systems.

Piwik

Analytics is an open-source analytics platform that keep the data on your own server.
Piwik ensures the privacy of your users and analytics data. When using Piwik, YOU keep control of your data, nobody else does. Your data is stored in your own MySQL database, and logs or report data will never be sent to other servers by Piwik.
So your visitor data is for you, and cannot be used for advertising platforms.

You can also control the privacy by mask the ip-address last 1, 2 or 3 bytes.
The geolocation will be inaccurate if you mask 2 or more bytes, but you can control the privacy of your visitors.

Piwik anonymize visitor IP address

Piwik also respect the DoNotTrack preference of your browser.
Do Not Track is a technology and policy proposal that enables users to opt out of tracking by websites they do not visit, including analytics services, advertising networks, and social platforms. By default, Piwik respects users preference and will not track visitors which have specified “I do not want to be tracked” in their web browsers. For more information about DoNotTrack, check out donottrack.us.

It has also official Android and iOS clients, to check that stats on your mobile device.

Conslusion

You can find self hosted solutions, for cloud based solutions from big companies, and the quality is great.
You might reasonably decide to stick with hosted software for the convenience it offers — but you should be aware of these free alternatives to the biggest services.
You can spin up a vps on e.g. DigitalOcean, and with a few clicks you have your own hosted solution.
